General Information
The Optimist Jack Rabbit Cross Country Ski Program is facilitated by the local Optimist Club of Orangeville.

It has provided Nordic Ski instruction to kids aged 5 to 12 years old for the past 28 years.

The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment, and we hope to help our youth develop an appreciation for the outdoors in winter and develop better fitness through active participation.

Some of our earliest participants are now returning to help with the instruction and offer inspiration to new kids.

We work with the kids for 2 hours every Sunday afternoon starting January 5, 2014 through to March 2, 2014.

Registration for the 2014 Jackrabbit Ski Program has been completed and has now reached capacity. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept any further applications. Thank you for your interest in the Jackrabbit Program.

Good Morning,

It's finally here! Jackrabbits will be starting this Sunday, January 5th, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. We will be meeting in the lower level of the Monora Park Pavilion in the same area where registration took place.

Check in

Please check in with the Jackrabbit table upon arrival for attendance and name tags. Your child will be assigned to a group according to age and more importantly overall experience. If you plan on skiing with your child, you must notify the registration desk to ensure the appropriate forms have been completed.

Just to confirm, if your child does not have their own skis, rentals for day to day use will be $5 per session. I would suggest attending the pavilion 20 - 30 minutes early to ensure correct sizing.

Weather Conditions

Please note that the program may be cancelled on some dates due to extreme weather conditions (ie. -30 degrees celsius or ice storm). You will be notified of any cancellations via email prior to 10:00am on the date of the event.

While it is important to keep your child warm in cold weather, it is also important not to overdress them. Bulkly jackets and heavy scarves for example can lead to overheating during physical activity and also restricts freedom of movement. It is best to dress you child in thin layers, including long underwear (preferably synthetic to wick moisture). If your child is 5-6 years old, a snow suit may be required as they will be in more direct contact with the snow/moisture.

I have included an attached document, which demonstrates the concept of layering for cross country skiing.

Having Fun

Most important of all, we want your children to have a great time! Cross country skiing is phenomenal exercise all while enjoying nature and having fun with other kids. Ideally, the skills developed throughout the program will lead to an enjoyable, healthy activity for life.

During this years program, we will be incorporating some exposure to cross country ski racing and related activities. Stay tuned for developments as the program gets underway.

The projected weather forecast for Sunday is -3 degrees celsius with snow. Looking forward to a great session.
